Animal shelters in the United States take in millions of dogs each year, with the ASPCA estimating the number to be around 3.1 million. While many are adopted, overcrowding and limited resources mean countless dogs face uncertain futures. The stress of shelter life can be especially hard on expecting dogs, whose health — and that of their unborn pups — hangs in the balance.
In these critical moments, temporary homes provide the space, care, and calm environment needed for pregnant dogs to safely deliver and raise their puppies. A moving video recently shared on Instagram shows how one foster mom’s timely rescue brought hope and happiness to a pregnant shelter dog and her growing family.

Uploaded on Instagram by foster mom @whitneysdogs, the reel documents the journey of a pregnant dog named Sprinkle Donut. Whitney had rescued Sprinkle from a shelter where the dog appeared frightened and withdrawn in her kennel.
Not long after being brought into a safer, calmer home environment, Sprinkle went into labor almost immediately. Whitney shares through on-screen text that the birth process lasted 10 hours and continued through the night, eventually resulting in a litter of 11 puppies.
The early days weren’t easy. Whitney explains that shortly after birth, the puppies began to fall ill. As a result, she spent many sleepless nights juggling vet visits and round-the-clock care. Despite her best efforts, three of the puppies did not survive. The remaining eight slowly regained strength and began to thrive. Whitney lovingly named the entire litter after donuts, matching their mom’s name.
The video spans several weeks, showing the puppies growing from fragile newborns into energetic nine-week-olds. Their personalities began to shine, and one by one, each was adopted into a loving home. Although Sprinkle stayed behind for a while to recover from her own health challenges, she eventually was adopted too.
In the caption, Whitney shares her excitement about an upcoming reunion for the entire “donut gang” in New York City. “I can’t wait to see them all back together, shenanigans and all,” she wrote. “It’s c–zy that it’s already been 5 months since they first came home with me.”
