Derek Hough, the charismatic “Dancing with the Stars” judge, recently shared an amusing revelation about his dog, Luna, in an interview with PEOPLE. On tour for his “Dance for the Holidays” show, Hough has found that his German Shepherd/Chow Chow mix has a unique effect on people. The adorable canine can transform even the toughest men into affectionate, playful souls, much to the delight of the crew and audience.

Derek Hough’s dog is everyone’s ‘support animal’ on tour

Luna is not just an ordinary travel companion for Derek Hough and his wife, Hayley Erbert. She has become an integral part of their holiday dance tour, visiting 40 cities across the United States. As Hough explains, “She’s literally everybody’s support animal.” He further describes how Luna’s presence brings out the softer side in people, even those you might least expect.

In a recent incident during a performance, Luna proved her star quality. As the first act concluded, Hough noticed Luna had wandered off. He found her at the edge of the stage, enthusiastically greeting the audience by licking their faces in the front row. The unexpected moment turned into an impromptu show-stealer, with thousands in the crowd captivated by Luna’s charm.

Hough also recently shared a video on Instagram that shows Luna greeting the crew members backstage. He captioned the reel, “Luna has the power to turn big burley [sic] men, into little loving boys.” It is clear that Luna’s presence is not just a personal comfort for Hough but a source of happiness for everyone involved in the tour.

While on the road, Luna’s accommodations have not been overlooked. “She takes up the entire bed on the bus,” Hough quips, but he would not have it any other way. Despite her bed-hogging tendencies, Luna’s companionship is invaluable to Hough and Erbert, making the hectic tour life more enjoyable.
